Detriment

Detriment is the sign opposite a planet's own, so Mars is in detriment in Libra and Venus in Aries. The planet is working in conditions that ask for the opposite of its instinct, which usually shows as a placement that has to adapt, negotiate or work harder for the same result. Traditional texts treat it plainly as a weakness. A more useful modern reading is friction rather than failure, since planets in detriment often develop unusual skill at the very thing the sign demands of them. Note the condition, then weigh it against the aspects.
