Positive or Active Polarity

Polarity divides the zodiac in two, alternating around the circle. The fire and air signs, Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius and Aquarius, make up one half. Older texts call this half masculine or positive. Modern practice more often says active or expressive, since the traditional names invite a reading about gender and worth that was never the intent. The distinction is about direction of energy: this half tends to move outward, initiate contact and express readily. It carries no advantage over the other half, and a balanced chart draws on both. The terms say nothing about a person's gender.
