Traditional Rulership
Traditional Rulership
Traditional rulership assigns the twelve signs to the seven visible planets, five of which rule two signs each.
Traditional rulership predates the telescope and uses only the seven visible bodies. The Sun rules Leo and the Moon rules Cancer. Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo, Venus rules Taurus and Libra, Mars rules Aries and Scorpio, Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Pisces, and Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius. The scheme is symmetrical around the Sun and Moon, which is why each of the other five governs a pair. Traditional and horary astrologers work with this set alone, and it remains the basis for the dignities. Many modern astrologers read it alongside the newer assignments.
