North Node
Definition
Not a physical body but a mathematical point where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic. It is read as the direction of growth and unfamiliar territory a person's chart is reaching toward, paired with a South Node describing more familiar, practiced terrain.
What it means
The Moon's orbital plane is tilted relative to the ecliptic (the Sun's apparent path), so the two orbits cross at two opposite points: the North Node and, exactly opposite it, the South Node. The nodes move slowly and mostly backward through the zodiac, taking about 18.6 years to complete a full cycle. Because the North Node has no mass or gravity of its own, it's read purely symbolically, most commonly as an axis of development: qualities to grow into (North) versus qualities already comfortable and worth moving beyond (South).
How it shows up in a chart
The North Node's sign and house describe the area of life and the qualities involved in that growth; its opposite South Node placement is read automatically from it, since the two are always in opposite signs and houses. A North Node conjunct another planet suggests that planet's themes are closely bound up in the person's developmental direction.
A worked example

Leo's themes center on individual confidence, creative self-expression, and stepping visibly into a personal role; the 7th house is the house of partnership and one-to-one relationships. Read together, the placement suggests a developmental pull toward bringing more individual, self-directed confidence into partnership and public relationship, moving beyond a more detached, group-oriented starting point described by the Aquarius South Node.
