Retrograde
Definition
A planet appears to move backward against the background stars from Earth's point of view. It is an optical illusion of relative orbital speed, not an actual reversal, and astrology reads a planet retrograde at birth as that planet's themes turning inward rather than outward.
What it means
Retrograde happens when Earth, moving faster on the inside track, overtakes an outer planet, making that planet appear to slow, stop, and drift backward for a period before resuming forward motion. Mercury retrogrades several times a year; outer planets like Jupiter and Saturn retrograde for months at a stretch, so it is common, not rare, for a birth chart to carry two or three retrograde placements. A planet retrograde at birth is generally read as that planet's energy working through review, revision, and internal processing rather than direct outward action.
How it shows up in a chart
Which planet is retrograde matters more than the fact of retrograde itself: a retrograde Mercury describes communication and thinking turned inward, while a retrograde Saturn describes discipline and structure built through a slower, more private process than the sign and house alone would suggest. Multiple retrogrades in one chart tend to read as a generally more internally-oriented, reflective temperament across several life areas at once.

4 AUGUST 1961 · 19:24 · HONOLULU Barack Obama's chart carries two retrograde planets: Jupiter at 0°51′ Aquarius and Saturn at 25°20′ Capricorn, both in the 12th house. Jupiter retrograde tends to internalize its themes of growth, belief, and expansion, favoring a personally-tested worldview over one adopted wholesale from others. Saturn retrograde in the same house adds a similarly internal relationship to discipline and long-term structure. Both landing in the 12th, the house of solitude and behind-the-scenes work, describes a pattern of forming convictions and self-discipline through private reflection before either reaches public expression.
