Tarot Birth Cards

Birth Card

Definition

A tarot Major Arcana card, or pair of cards, derived numerologically from a birth date: read as an archetypal theme running through a life.

What it means

The birth card method sums every digit of the birth date (month, day, and year) and reduces the total to a number from 0 to 21, the range of the Major Arcana. A total above 21 reduces further by summing its own digits. Totals over 9 keep both the two-digit result (Card 1, sometimes called the Personality card) and its own single-digit reduction (Card 2, sometimes called the Soul card), read as a pair of related themes rather than one fixed archetype. Each card also carries a ruling planet, drawn from classical numerology's planet-per-digit associations.

How it shows up in a chart

Card 1 is generally read as the more outwardly visible theme, the pattern likely to be recognized by others, while Card 2 describes an inner or supporting theme underneath it. A rare double-hop reduction (when the two-digit total's own reduction is itself still two digits, as with 19) adds a third, Shadow card describing a hidden factor in the pairing.

A worked example

4 AUGUST 1961 · HONOLULU Barack Obama's birth date reduces to a Card 1 of Justice (11) and a Card 2 of The High Priestess (2), ruled by the Moon. Justice is traditionally read as themes of fairness, accountability, and clear-eyed judgment; The High Priestess adds an undercurrent of intuition and quiet, private knowing beneath that more outwardly visible theme of balanced judgment.
