Natal Chart
Ruling Planet
Definition
The planet that traditionally rules the sign on a chart's Ascendant, often called the chart ruler. It is read as a second, more indirect signature layered on top of the Sun and Moon.
What it means
Each of the 12 zodiac signs has a traditional planetary ruler (Aries's is Mars, Cancer's is the Moon, and so on); whichever planet rules a chart's rising sign is that chart's ruling planet. Because the Ascendant already sets a chart's overall first-impression tone, the ruling planet is read as an extension of that same theme: its own sign, house, and aspects describe how the Ascendant's energy actually gets carried out in practice.
How it shows up in a chart
The ruling planet's placement is read together with the Ascendant sign itself: an Aries Ascendant (ruled by Mars) placed with Mars in a private, introspective house reads differently than the same Ascendant with Mars placed prominently and publicly. Some systems also track a second, modern ruler alongside the traditional one; this app uses the traditional, classical rulership scheme throughout.
A worked example
4 AUGUST 1961 · 19:24 · HONOLULU Barack Obama's Ascendant is Aquarius, traditionally ruled by Saturn. His natal Saturn sits at 25°20′ Capricorn, retrograde, in the 12th house. Read together, the placement suggests that Aquarius rising's even-keeled, idea-driven first impression is, underneath, being carried out through an inward-turned, privately-processed relationship with discipline and long-term structure, rather than one built and demonstrated in public view.
