Annual Profections Calculator

Annual profections are Hellenistic astrology's oldest time-lord technique: each year of your life advances one sign forward from your natal Ascendant, and that sign's ruling planet becomes your "lord of the year." This calculator builds your full profection ladder from birth to the present, marks which year is active now, and nests the daily profection cycle underneath it.How it works ↓

Calculating your placements…

Annual profections are Hellenistic astrology's oldest time-lord technique: each year of life activates the next zodiac sign counting forward from your natal Ascendant, and that sign's ruling planet becomes the "lord of the year", the planet whose condition in your birth chart colors the whole year's themes. This calculator lays out your entire profection ladder from birth through age 90, highlights the year you're in right now, and nests daily profections underneath it, the same technique applied one day at a time, cycling through the signs every twelve days for a finer-grained read on any given day.

Each birthday moves your Ascendant one sign forward

Profections count in whole-year steps. Year 0 (birth to your first birthday) belongs to your natal Ascendant sign itself; year 1 moves to the next sign forward, year 2 the sign after that, and so on around the zodiac. Because there are twelve signs, the count wraps every twelve years — age 12, 24, 36, and every multiple after that lands back on your natal Ascendant sign.

The page shows your natal Ascendant sign directly, so you can see exactly which sign the count starts from and trace the ladder forward without doing the arithmetic yourself.

The lord of the year is the ruler of the activated sign

Whichever sign your current age lands on, its classical ruler is "lord of the year" for the twelve months following your most recent birthday. That planet's condition in your natal chart — sign, house, aspects, dignity — is read as coloring the themes of the year, since it's now running the show.

This is a different mechanism from decennials or firdaria, which hand off rulership on their own planetary schedules rather than by sign position.

Daily profections repeat the same technique inside each year

Nested under your active annual lord is a faster L2 cycle: daily profections apply the identical sign-counting logic to days instead of years, cycling through all twelve signs every twelve days. The daily lord for today sits inside the yearly lord for this year, giving you a short-range read layered on top of the annual one.

The full cycle resets every twelve years

Because profections only have twelve possible positions, your lord of the year at age 12 is the same sign as at birth, age 24 repeats it again, and so on. Some astrologers treat these twelve-year returns — especially the first at age 12 and the "big" one at 36 — as markers worth noting in their own right, since the whole sequence is starting over.

Profections are the simplest rung on the time-lord ladder

Compared to the other Hellenistic time-lord techniques, profections are the most mechanical: no unequal periods to calculate, no day/night sect split to resolve, just a fixed one-sign-per-year count. Firdaria assigns planets in a sequence that depends on whether you were born during the day or at night, and decennials gives each planet a different number of years to hold. If you want the fuller picture, run your chart through firdaria or decennials alongside this one.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find my lord of the year?

Count forward from your natal Ascendant sign by your current age in whole years; the sign you land on is activated, and its classical ruler is your lord of the year. This calculator does the count for you and shows the result directly.

What are daily profections?

The same sign-counting technique applied to days instead of years, cycling through all twelve signs every twelve days. It runs as a faster layer nested underneath your annual lord of the year.

Why does my lord of the year repeat every 12 years?

Profections only have twelve possible sign positions, so the cycle wraps back to your natal Ascendant sign every twelve years — the same lord of the year recurs at ages 12, 24, 36, and onward.
