Each birthday moves your Ascendant one sign forward
Profections count in whole-year steps. Year 0 (birth to your first birthday) belongs to your natal Ascendant sign itself; year 1 moves to the next sign forward, year 2 the sign after that, and so on around the zodiac. Because there are twelve signs, the count wraps every twelve years — age 12, 24, 36, and every multiple after that lands back on your natal Ascendant sign.

Nested under your active annual lord is a faster L2 cycle: daily profections apply the identical sign-counting logic to days instead of years, cycling through all twelve signs every twelve days. The full cycle resets every twelve years
Because profections only have twelve possible positions, your lord of the year at age 12 is the same sign as at birth, age 24 repeats it again, and so on. Some astrologers treat these twelve-year returns — especially the first at age 12 and the "big" one at 36 — as markers worth noting in their own right, since the whole sequence is starting over.
