The sidereal zodiac measures planetary positions against the actual background of stars, using an ayanamsa (a correction for the slow drift between the tropical and sidereal zodiacs) to convert from tropical positions. This is the zodiac Vedic astrology uses.
Your placements shift by about 24 degrees
Tropical and sidereal astrology measure the same sky differently. Tropical anchors the zodiac to the seasons; sidereal anchors it to the actual background of stars, and the gap between the two, called the ayanamsa, has grown to roughly 24 degrees because of a slow wobble in Earth's axis known as precession.
That 24-degree gap is almost a full zodiac sign. It's why most people's sidereal Sun sign lands one sign earlier than their tropical Sun sign, a tropical Aries is very often a sidereal Pisces.
Lahiri is the default ayanamsa here
This calculator uses the Lahiri ayanamsa, the correction figure adopted by India's Calendar Reform Committee and the one taught in most Vedic astrology programs. When someone says "sidereal chart" without specifying which ayanamsa, Lahiri is almost always what they mean, which is why it's the default here.
This is a plain sidereal chart, not a Kundli
This tool gives you sign, house, and degree placements in the sidereal zodiac, nothing more specialized. It doesn't show the North Indian square layout, nakshatra, or pada that a traditional Jyotish reading uses; for that, use the vedic-kundli tool instead.
It also isn't a divisional chart. If you want the D9 strength-check used for marriage and inner planetary condition, or the sub-lord precision of KP astrology, those live in navamsa-d9 and krishnamurti-kp-chart respectively. This tool is the generic starting point underneath all of them.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Lahiri the only sidereal ayanamsa?
No. Lahiri is the most widely used and the one this calculator defaults to, but other ayanamsas exist, including Raman and the KP ayanamsa, each shifting placements slightly differently. See raman-ayanamsa-chart and krishnamurti-kp-chart for those variants.
Do I need this if I already have my tropical chart?
Only if you want a Vedic-style reading. Tropical and sidereal charts serve different traditions of astrology, so having one doesn't make the other redundant. They answer different questions using different placements.
Does this show my nakshatra?
No. This is a plain sidereal chart with sign, house, and degree placements only. For nakshatra and pada on every placement, use the vedic-kundli tool.
