Midheaven (MC)

Definition

The highest point in a chart, at the top of the vertical axis: the placement most closely tied to public role, reputation, and vocation.

What it means

The Midheaven, or MC (Medium Coeli), marks the point in the zodiac that was due south and highest in the sky at the moment and place of birth. Unlike the Ascendant, which changes with the earth's daily rotation, the Midheaven tracks that same rotation but measures the chart's north-south axis instead of its east-west one, so it too shifts meaningfully within the same day. It sits at the cusp of the 10th house and describes the public-facing side of a life: career direction, reputation, and the role someone is recognized for by the wider world, distinct from the private, internal identity described by the Ascendant and Sun.

How it shows up in a chart

The Midheaven sets the 10th house cusp the same way the Ascendant sets the 1st, and its opposite point, the Imum Coeli (IC), sets the 4th house cusp of home and private life. A planet placed close to the Midheaven, especially the ruling planet of its sign, tends to color how someone's public role and career get expressed.

A worked example

4 AUGUST 1961 · 19:24 · HONOLULU Barack Obama's Midheaven sits at 28°54′ Scorpio. Scorpio on the Midheaven tends to read as a career and public role built around depth, intensity, and working with high-stakes or transformative material rather than surface-level concerns. Because the Midheaven sits opposite the 4th-house Imum Coeli, the placement also describes a public role that draws directly on material usually kept private, brought forward rather than left in the background.
