Numerology

Personal Year

Definition

A yearly cycle number in numerology, recalculated every year, describing the general theme and energy of that particular year rather than a lifelong trait.

What it means

Personal Year is calculated by reducing the digits of the current calendar year to a single digit, reducing the birth month and birth day to single digits the same way, then adding all three together and reducing that sum. Because the calendar year changes every twelve months, the Personal Year number cycles through 1 through 9 over roughly a nine-year span and then repeats, unlike Life Path, which is fixed at birth and never changes.

How it shows up in a chart

Personal Year is read alongside Life Path rather than in its place: Life Path describes the broad, lifelong direction, while Personal Year describes which chapter of that direction is most active in a given twelve-month span. A Personal Year 1, for instance, is generally read as a year favoring fresh starts and new initiative, regardless of what a person's underlying Life Path number is.

A worked example

4 AUGUST 1961 · HONOLULU Barack Obama's Personal Year for 2026 reduces to 4, calculated from his birth month and day (August 4) combined with 2026's own digit reduction. In numerology, a Personal Year 4 is generally read as a year favoring structure, steady effort, and building something durable rather than rapid change, a different theme from the leadership and initiative themes of a Personal Year 1.
