Life Path Number
Definition
A single digit, or occasionally a master number, derived from a person's full birth date. It is numerology's broadest read on someone's overall direction and the lessons their life tends to circle back to.
What it means
The Life Path number comes from reducing the digits of the birth month, day, and year down to single digits and adding them together, then reducing that sum the same way, until one digit remains (with 11, 22, and 33 sometimes kept unreduced as master numbers, depending on the system). Because it's built from the full date rather than a name, it's considered the steadiest of the core numerology numbers: unlike Expression or Soul Urge, it doesn't depend on how a name is spelled or which name someone currently goes by.
How it shows up in a chart
Life Path is read alongside the other core numbers built from a name, Expression, Soul Urge, and Personality, rather than in isolation. Where those describe outward talents, inner motivation, and how someone comes across, Life Path is treated as the throughline: the general direction the other numbers tend to get read against.
A worked example
4 AUGUST 1961 · HONOLULU Barack Obama's birth date reduces to a Life Path of 2. In numerology, 2 is associated with partnership, diplomacy, and sensitivity to others, a temperament oriented toward cooperation and reading a room rather than driving it from the front.
