Sade Sati Calculator
Sade Sati is a Vedic technique that tracks Saturn's slow transit through the three sidereal signs around your natal Moon — the sign before it, the sign it occupies, and the sign after it. Each leg takes roughly 2.5 years, for a total run of about 7.5 years, and Vedic astrologers treat the three legs as distinct phases: rising, peak, and setting. This calculator finds your natal Moon sign in the Lahiri sidereal zodiac and lays out exactly where you stand in the cycle right now.How it works ↓
Calculating your placements…
See your Sade Sati timeline, the ~7.5-year Saturn transit through the signs before, over, and after your natal Moon.
Saturn tracks your Moon sign, not your Sun sign
Sade Sati is built entirely around your natal Moon's sidereal sign. Saturn's transit through your Sun sign or ascendant doesn't count here — only its position relative to the Moon matters, which is why two people born the same day with different birth times can be in completely different phases of their own Sade Sati.
The calculation uses the Lahiri ayanamsa, the sidereal reference point standard in Vedic astrology and offset by roughly 24 degrees from the tropical zodiac most Western astrology uses. Your sidereal Moon sign can differ from your tropical one, so this calculator computes it independently rather than reusing a tropical placement.
Three phases, each about 2.5 years
The full cycle splits into three legs of roughly equal length. The rising phase runs while Saturn transits the sign before your Moon, the peak phase while it transits your Moon's own sign, and the setting phase while it transits the sign after. Vedic tradition holds the peak phase as the most demanding of the three, with pressure building through the rising phase and easing through the setting phase.
Your birth time determines which sidereal sign your Moon falls in, which in turn determines exactly when each phase starts and ends for you — a birth time that's off by even an hour can shift your Moon into a neighboring sign and change the whole timeline.
One of several nested time-lord techniques
Sade Sati belongs to a family of Vedic and Hellenistic methods that map out life as a sequence of ruled periods rather than single-moment transits. Vimshottari Dasha does this with all nine planets across a fixed 120-year cycle; zodiacal releasing, a separate Hellenistic technique, does it with nested chapters of varying length. Sade Sati is narrower — it's Saturn-specific and recurs roughly every 30 years as Saturn completes its orbit — but it shares the same underlying idea of reading your life through nested ruled spans of time.
Sade Sati recurs roughly every 30 years, not once in a lifetime
Because Sade Sati is tied to Saturn's own orbit — about 29.5 years to circle the zodiac once — most people experience it two or three times across a full lifespan, not just once. Each pass tracks the same three-phase structure around your natal Moon, so the calculator's output looks the same in shape each time, only the calendar dates differ.
What Sade Sati doesn't tell you
Sade Sati names a window of time, not a specific event — it's traditionally read as a period of significant restructuring or pressure, not a guarantee of hardship. It also says nothing on its own about which area of life is affected; that reading comes from Saturn's natal house and sign placement and the houses it transits during each phase, which sit outside what this calculator computes.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know what phase of Sade Sati I am in?
Your phase depends on which sidereal sign Saturn currently transits relative to your natal Moon sign — the sign before is rising, your Moon's own sign is peak, and the sign after is setting. This calculator finds your exact phase from your birth data.
Does Sade Sati use the sidereal or tropical zodiac?
Sidereal, using the Lahiri ayanamsa — the standard reference point in Vedic astrology, offset from the tropical zodiac by about 24 degrees. Your sidereal Moon sign can differ from your tropical one.
Why does Sade Sati depend on my Moon and not my Sun sign?
Sade Sati tracks Saturn's transit relative to your natal Moon specifically, not your Sun sign or ascendant. Two people born on the same day with different birth times can land in different signs — and different Sade Sati phases — depending on their Moon's exact position.
