Vimshottari Dasha starts from the exact degree your Moon occupied within its Nakshatra — one of 27 lunar mansions the sidereal zodiac is divided into — at the moment you were born. That degree fixes which of the nine planetary lords opens your sequence and how far into that first period you already were at birth.

Everyone runs through the same nine lords in the same fixed order, but where you enter the cycle, and therefore every date after it, depends entirely on your personal birth Nakshatra. The nine lords and their fixed years

The 120-year cycle runs through nine planetary Maha Dasha lords in a fixed order, each with a fixed length: Ketu 7 years, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, and Mercury 17 — adding up to 120. These years never change from person to person; what changes is only your starting point in the sequence, set by your birth Nakshatra.

Within each Maha Dasha, an Antar Dasha (sub-period) cycles through the same nine lords in proportion to their years, so a longer Maha Dasha like Venus's 20 years carries longer sub-periods than a shorter one like Ketu's 7.

Vimshottari Dasha shares its core idea — life read as a sequence of ruled periods rather than a single transit — with other techniques on this site. Sade Sati applies the same nested-period logic narrowly to Saturn's transit around your Moon, while zodiacal releasing, a separate Hellenistic technique using the tropical zodiac and a different starting point, builds its own nested chapters from the Lot of Spirit or Fortune. All three are worth reading side by side if you want the fuller time-lord picture, though they aren't interchangeable — each uses its own reference point and tradition.

A full pass through all nine lords never quite fits a lifetime

The 120-year cycle is longer than almost any human lifespan, so most charts move through six, seven, or eight of the nine Maha Dasha lords rather than completing the full sequence. Which lords you live through, and in what order, is entirely set by your starting Nakshatra — two people can share a birthday and still never experience the same lord at the same age.

What Vimshottari Dasha doesn't replace
