Authority
Definition
A person's built-in decision-making center in Human Design: the inner signal, gut response, emotional wave, or another defined center, that the system says to trust over pure logic when making choices.
What it means
Authority is determined by which centers are defined in the bodygraph, checked in a fixed hierarchy: Emotional authority (an emotional wave that needs time to settle) takes priority if the Solar Plexus is defined; otherwise Sacral authority (an immediate gut yes or no) if the Sacral is defined; and so on down through Splenic, Ego, and Self-Projected authority, with Reflectors alone having no consistent inner authority and relying on the lunar cycle instead. Whichever authority applies, the premise is the same: the mind is treated as a tool for processing and communicating a decision, not the part of the body meant to make it.
How it shows up in a chart
Authority works together with strategy (see hd-strategy): strategy describes the right circumstances to make a decision, and authority describes which internal signal to consult once those circumstances are present. Emotional authority in particular is described as needing a wave of time, sleeping on a decision rather than answering in the moment, since the emotional signal fluctuates and only clarifies with a full cycle.
A worked example
4 SEPTEMBER 1981 · 21:47 · HOUSTON Beyoncé's authority is Sacral: her defined Sacral center is the source of the gut-level yes or no her decisions are meant to run through. Combined with her Generator strategy (see hd-strategy), the reading is that decisions land most reliably in the body's immediate response to a real, present question, rather than in extended deliberation or waiting out an emotional wave the way someone with Emotional authority would.
