HD Type
Definition
A person's Human Design energy type, one of Manifestor, Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, or Reflector. It is the broadest description in the system of how someone is built to interact with the world and where their energy naturally does or doesn't sustain itself.
What it means
Type is derived from which centers in the bodygraph are defined (consistently active) versus open (variable, picking up and amplifying energy from others), and specifically from whether the Sacral center is defined. A defined Sacral produces the two response-based types, Generator and Manifesting Generator, together the most common types by population share. An undefined Sacral without a direct motor-to-throat connection produces a Projector; specific motor-to-throat connections without a defined Sacral produce a Manifestor. The rare case of no defined centers at all produces a Reflector.
How it shows up in a chart
Each type carries a distinct strategy, its recommended way of engaging with life and decisions (see hd-strategy), and each is prone to a specific pattern of frustration when working against that strategy. Type is read together with authority (see hd-authority), which describes how a decision should be made, and profile (see hd-profile), which describes the role and learning style layered on top.
A worked example

Generators make up the largest share of the population and are built to generate sustainable energy through responding to what shows up in life rather than initiating projects from a standing start. Read alongside her Sacral authority, the type describes someone whose energy is most reliable and satisfying when it moves in response to something real in front of her, rather than through self-generated momentum alone.
