Stephen Hawking showed that black holes emit radiation, a result that now carries his name. It forced general relativity and quantum mechanics into the same argument. Diagnosed with motor neurone disease in his early twenties and given a short prognosis, he worked for more than fifty years afterwards. A Brief History of Time made cosmology a mainstream subject.
